Compositions for Heavy Metal DëVices
Composer Jason Staczek and Instrument Inventor Ela Lamblin share their collaborative process and the resulting compositions created for unique instrumentation. The pair will discuss the joy and challenges of creating new music for a menagerie of one-of-a-kind instruments. Over a span of twenty years, Ela has produced a collection of (often) large musical devices designed to delight the ear and eye. You'll meet the Rumitone, the Metalphor, the Longwave, the Violcano, the Pollenphone, the Stamenphone and the Shrimp Platter, among others. Ela and Jason will speak about their earliest collaboration on a film score for Guy Maddin's Keyhole and how that experience led to further explorations for live performance. They will share details of their most recent effort, the creation of "Heavy Metal DëVices", a 90-minute work for invented instruments played by eight musicians and dancers. The piece will debut at the Moore Theater on December 14, 2013.
