The Department of Music offers professional academic and performance courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for the qualified student who desires to specialize in music. The department also provides a high quality educational experience in music for all university students. In addition, it serves as a focal point for the campus and the regional community through collaboration, participation and leadership in music performance and instruction.

To provide a public undergraduate education of excellence by demonstrating and promoting among its students the highest levels of professional preparation with emphases in music performance and music education, composition, music history and literature, and conducting.
To foster the growth of musicianship through the acquisition of knowledge and insight, and the development of skills and critical thinking for aesthetic, creative and appreciative purposes.
